Overview
This unit continues students’ understanding of computational thinking by having them apply computational thinking skills and processes to problems in science and engineering. The framework students will use to accomplish this is the engineering design process and the scientific method.

Part 1: Using Computational Thinking to Solve Small Problems in Science and Engineering
Content

Task 1: Computational Thinking in Science
In this task students identify where the four pillars of computational thinking (decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm design) belong in the scientific method and engineering design process.

 

Task 2: Crime Solving
In this task, students will use the scientific method and computational thinking skills to solve a crime using fingerprint analysis.

 

Task 3: The Best Bounce
In this task, students will use the engineering design process and computational thinking to design an environmentally friendly bouncy ball.

Content

Task 1: What Are You Drinking?
In this task students will use computational thinking and the scientific method to determine if the water around them is safe enough for its intended purposes.

 

Task 2: Making a Game for Containing a Disease
In this task, students develop a quarantine game to test the effectiveness of a quarantine during a disease epidemic using the engineering design process and computational thinking.
