Overview
In this module, your students will explore all about sight and how it can vary. Students will also look at other senses and how animals and plants process information using their senses for survival. Researching a sunflower for inspiration, students will design a stand to make a solar panel more efficient. The module concludes with discovering how sight can vary between people.

Title
Focus Question: Does everyone see the same things?
Content

Guide students in developing a class focus question about the phenomenon. Does everyone see the same things?

Title
Discovery 1: How do our eyes work?
Content

Students will learn how the human eye works with the brain to process sight. Students will create a model of vision. Students will bend light by making two periscope designs.

Title
Discovery 2: How do our eyes play tricks on us and why?
Content

Students explore how the brain processes information. They will also create their own animation using what they have learned about human sight.

Title
Discovery 3: What other senses do we use to process information?
Content

Students will research other senses, such as smell. Students will also learn what their pets are able to see.

Title
Discovery 4: How do an organism’s structures help it to survive?
Content

Students will explore what insects see and how plants attract insects. Students will also learn about the different structures that organisms have to help them survive.

Title
Discovery 5: How can sight vary between people?
Content

Students explore the variety and benefits of colorblindness.

Title
Engineering Design Project: Sunflowers and Solar Panels
Content

Using what you have learned about sunflowers, decide how to position a solar panel to maximize its efficiency, or allow it to work the best.
