For some of you, summer “break” is already here; for others it’s so close you can taste it. While summer can be a time of rejuvenation and rest, it can also be a good opportunity to get those required professional development hours. NICERC is hosting a few PD workshops across the country, and with the exception of our Cyber Education Discovery Forum, they’re all free to attend.
Here is a list and description of those opportunities:
Who: Middle School Teachers
What: During the STEM: Explore, Discover, Apply (STEM EDA) workshop, teachers will learn how to incorporate STEM, the Engineering Design Process, and micro:bit coding into their classrooms.

What: Cyber Literacy Workshop
Cyber Literacy builds strong cyber foundations by introducing the opportunities, threats, responsibilities, and legal constraints associated with operating in cyberspace. Cyber Literacy will use the Boe-Bot platform to lay the foundation for further exploration into STEM and cyber. Teachers will learn how to build and program a Boe-Bot for use in their classroom. They will also receive access to free curriculum materials!
Cyber Math Workshop
The Cyber Math workshop will introduce teachers to new and innovative ways to integrate technology, coding, and computational thinking into their math courses. Teachers will receive access to free curriculum materials in Algebra I, Advanced Math, and Computational Thinking in Math.

Who: Upper Elementary through 12th Grade Teachers
What: The Cyber Education Discovery Forum (CEDF) is a multi-day professional development event designed to address our growing national shortage of cyber professionals at its roots. We believe that the key to filling the cyber workforce shortage is to empower and equip K-12 educators as they prepare the next generation to thrive in the cyber workforce of tomorrow.
At the CEDF, you’ll see teachers learning programming languages they’ve never attempted before, turning piles of parts into a working robots, exploring the implications of living in an internet-connected world, and uncovering new ways of thinking that will empower students to tackle complex problems with confidence.

Who: High School Teachers
What: Cyber Literacy explores the ethics, roles, responsibilities of individuals in a cyber context while also providing a foundation of “how stuff works” to building the mindset necessary for exploring hardware and software-based security. Basic networking terminology and activities are also covered in this workshop. Teachers use the Shield-Bots with Arduino as an instructional tool to provide a point of concrete interaction to the intangible digital world. This workshop will be great for teachers who are looking to integrate cyber through the Arduino platform.
This workshop showcases the Cyber Interstate™ and introduces teachers to project-driven, hands-on curricula, projects, and technology that provides new, innovative ways to engage students in the classroom, as well as introduce students to potential cyber and STEM career fields.
This workshop will be led by subject matter experts from the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center, an academic division of the Cyber Innovation Center. Participants should bring their own laptop or Chromebook. Lunch is available on Bluefield’s campus. All teachers will receive access to free online curriculum materials!

What: micro:bit Workshop
The micro:bit is a versatile, affordable platform whose uses will grow with your students’ skills. In this full-day workshop, teachers will work through the basics of block-based coding projects and learn how to integrate them in their classroom. No prior coding experience required!
STEM EDA Workshop
During the STEM: Explore, Discover, Apply (STEM EDA) workshop, teachers experience hands-on, project-driven modules for middle school. The STEM EDA curriculum engages students in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and liberal arts. Teachers will learn how to use the Engineering Design process to develop 21st century skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, leadership, team-building, creativity, and communication. Each module infuses cyber contexts and humanities connections into fundamental STEM concepts.

Who: Bossier Parish K – 12 Educators
What: The micro:bit is a versatile, affordable platform whose uses will grow with your students’ skills. In this full-day workshop, teachers will be able to choose between block-based (introductory) and text-based (Python) programming languages as they work through a variety of coding projects.

Who: Bossier Parish Elementary Science Teachers
What: STEAM Fundamentals is a phenomenon-based, hands-on curriculum designed to engage elementary students in real-world applications of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. In this half-day workshop, teachers will explore phenomenon-based learning, walk through hands-on projects, and discuss strategies for implementation.
This workshop is targeted for 3rd – 5th grade SOAR science teachers but is open to all Bossier Parish teachers. It will be led by subject matter experts from the National Integrated Cyber Education Research Center (NICERC), the academic division of the Cyber Innovation Center. Participants should bring their own laptop or Chromebook with USB capabilities. All teachers will receive access to free online curriculum materials!

What: Cyber Fundamentals (Middle School) Workshop
Cyber Fundamentals with micro:bit is ideal for introducing block-based coding at the middle school level. The micro:bit is a versatile, affordable platform whose uses will grow with your students’ skills. In this full-day workshop, teachers will work through the basics of block-based coding and the micro:bit.
Cyber Literacy (High School) Workshop
Cyber Literacy builds strong cyber foundations by introducing the opportunities, threats, responsibilities, and legal constraints associated with operating in cyberspace. Cyber Literacy will use the cyber:bot platform to lay the foundation for further exploration into STEM and cyber. The cyber:bot is a micro:bit outfitted with a robotics chassis. In this two day workshop, teachers will learn how to build and program a cyber:bot using Python and learn projects and strategies for teaching with the cyber:bot.
