Integrating Cybersecurity into Your Current Middle School Teaching Assignment
Charlene Cooper gives a preview of what CEDF attendees in the Cybersecurity Awareness for Middle School workshop track will be covering this summer from June 21-23.
As a teacher, I sought opportunities to create cross curricular connections in the content I was teaching. I believe integrating subjects can help to create relevancy for students. Cybersecurity isn’t an isolated topic and awareness can easily be integrated into many aspects within a school. Our middle school cybersecurity modules were created with intention to not only support standards, but also to integrate multiple subjects.

Our encryption module supports Common Core Mathematics standards, Common Core English Language Arts standards, and C3 Framework for Social Studies State standards. As a way to integrate cybersecurity into math, students have an opportunity to study and use frequency analysis as they decrypt messages. Students also look at how encryption and some encryption devices have evolved throughout history.
The media literacy module supports Common Core English Language Arts standards, C3 Framework for Social Studies State standards and ISTE standards for students. In this module, students study popular propaganda techniques from WWII and learn how those techniques have evolved into forms of cyber propaganda we see today. Students are also closely analyzing text through instructional strategies like text rendering.
Our team has worked hard to also create modules that can easily be customized to fit your class schedule. Within each module are enriching Discoveries that can be taught alone. We give you the choice to use the module in its entirety, or instead use the Discovery that best supports the content you need to cover.
